Son-Rise-Breakfast

 All are Welcome!

The dialogue between Jesus and his disciples in Matthew 25: 35-45 is home to a very significant characteristic of discipleship.  It exemplifies Christian response to the needs of sisters and brothers in Christ.  While it is not the literal premise upon which the mission of the “Son-Rise Breakfast” was founded some four years ago, it is what occurs every Sunday of the year.  With the wonderful physical assistance of seven other churches, First Lutheran Church of Dayton is privileged to welcome and serve those who are in need.

All are welcome as we literally and figuratively serve hundreds of guests each month who are either homeless, or have homes, but continue to live in abject poverty.  A hearty breakfast, however, is not the only source of nourishment.  We offer the “First Praise” worship service immediately following breakfast at 8:30 AM. This nourishment is through prayers, praises, proclamation of the Word of God, and Holy Communion.

This mission is supported not only by the following congregations who help to serve the weekly breakfasts, there is a generous grant from Thrivent Financial, and monetary donations from other Dayton-area houses of faith, and a number of local businesses.  The congregations who serve monthly are:

  • 1st week of the month:     First Lutheran Church, Church of the Messiah, and Sh’ma Israel
  • 2nd week of the month:    Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Kettering
  • 3rd week of the month:     St. John Lutheran Church, Miamisburg
  • 4th week of the month:     Living Word Church, Vandalia
  • 5th week of the month:     Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, West Milton
